Just in time for summer, Jones Coffee presents SECOND SATURDAYS, an after-hours night of exceptional music, food and drink.

Every second Saturday of the month, Jones features an eclectic array of local as well as international musical acts. Suitable for the whole family yet edgy enough for the most serious aficionados, the monthly music series will kick-off SATURDAY, MAY 11, featuring the dark country folk/rock sounds of two of Jones’ favorite local talents, Zach + Bridget and RT N’ the 44s.

The night’s opener, Zach + Bridget is a sublime duo composed of Zachary Robert Galanis (Guitar/Vocals) and Bridget Schack (Harmonium/Vocals). The two met while performing in a gospel choir shortly after Galanis relocated from Salt Lake City, UT to Los Angeles. With lyrically-driven folk songs and tight harmonies, the duet became the focus for two albums released by Galanis, Wild Unknown(2012) and Dimes(2010). Our headliner, RT N’ the 44s, is a folk noir band that was founded in Los Angeles in 2009 by singer/songwriter RT Valine (Wood n’ Wire/Vocals). With the intent to make listenable music from junk, RT and fellow bandmates, Michael “Swimmy” Webb (Washboard/Vocals), Brendan Willard (Banjo/Bass/Vocals), and Leif Bunting (Washboard/Banjo/Bass/Vocals) dusted off the old tunes RT used to perform to empty L.A. bars in the late 90′s, reviving these songs with instruments crafted from tin, 2×4′s and salvaged parts. Described as a “vintage country band with dark obsessions,” this simple band’s intimate performances engage the audience through sing along and call and response. Baristas from all over southern california will get together to compete in a head to head latte art competition. They will pour their best hearts, tulips, rosettas, and whatever else they can free-pour into a latte, cappuccino, macchiato, or possible surprise cup.

This is the first competition in an 8 month series. Each month 32 competitors will compete with a winner every month that will automatically advance to the finals which will be held in November.

The winner of the kick-off event this thursday will not only move onto the finals but will win prizes from our sponsors at Espresso Parts, La Marzocco, & Barista Magazine.

Breaking away from accepted conventions in both technique and subject matter, Los Angeles fine artist, Avi Roth will present his inventive work Coffeegraph® in an exclusive exhibit opening on Saturday, April 6th, 2013, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM at Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, California.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature a silent auction to benefit the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.

Mr. Josh Mancell is the talented soundtrack composer and scorer of the newly-aired Disney animation series The Bite-Sized Adventures of Sam Sandwich. Josh Mancell is a Los Angeles-based composer who writes music for film, television, interactive and commercial projects. His ability to create sound worlds that uniquely fit each project has earned him a diverse credit list as well as two Emmy nominations. Josh’s years of scoring experience and far-reaching knowledge of music in a range of styles makes him a versatile resource for original composition.

Stephen Holman is a painter, performance artist and multi-media mad scientist whose artworks have been exhibited and performed across the USA, England and Japan. His career has included co-founding and directing the notorious troupe/venue Theatre Carnivale in Los Angeles in the late 1980s and creating animation series for Nickelodeon, Warner Bros and Disney. His work has been called “a wildly inventive treat” by the LA TIMES and “performance art at its finest, with the guts to go beyond the boundaries” by the LA Weekly.
