	Mexico Organic UDEPOM coffee comes from the Sierra Madre region of Chiapas in Southern Mexico. This region is characterized by poor infrastructure, unemployment, a high rate of illiteracy, and low life expectancy. UDEPOM was organized as an effort to secure a just price for local coffee and to help sustain natural resources. The cooperative members are almost 99% indigenous from Mache, Tzotzi, Tojolaba, Jacaleco, and Tzeltal origin. The traditional knowledge and technologies of these people lead the basis of their organic methods they employed today including the use of composts and natural fertilizers. All of UDEPOM's coffee is grown at high altitudes. The native Mayan farmers on the volcanic highland grow all the coffee in the old style - preserving the tropical forest, protecting flora and fauna, and without use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Each farmer is paid on a work-share basis, not by how much his/her individual farm yields. Farm sizes vary between 1 and 10 acres. The value of the work-share increases as each farm becomes fully organic and the harvest is worth more. They work in groups of 10 and participate equally in jobs to meet all their needs.
