RE: Indonesia Coffee Update

The recent catastrophes in Indonesia have had a direct effect on the coffee growing regions. Prices were already on the rise within Indonesia before the tsunami. Now the coffee prices are “through the roof” or not available at all.

We will begin finding replacement coffees for the taste profiles in our blends immediately. We will offer straight-origin Indonesian coffees as long as the qualities we seek are available. If you have a particular affinity towards Indonesian coffee, please be prepared for prices to jump… very high.

One of our customers asked me, “Why would the coffee-growing regions be affected, isn’t the coffee grown in the mountains?” I had to remind him that developing countries already have fragile infrastructures, especially when they are torn apart by separatist guerrillas and repressive governments. Everything is interrelated. Coffee needs people to pick it, mills to mill it, trucks to move it, ships to ship it and money to finance it. Any resources remaining are being utilized to rebuild these countries.

We need to encourage Indonesians to rebuild through rewards for quality products.

Sumatra coffee is traditionally processed by the “natural method" in which the coffee cherry is dried on the coffee seed. This method contributes to a musty, spicy, and earthy character; the expectation and tradition that fine roasters have come to know and enjoy. Within the last few years, demands for cleaner coffee from Sumatra has resulted in a transition from the traditional natural method to the current “semi-washed method”. This method depulps the coffee cherry from the coffee seed before they are dry; hence, cleaning the coffee seed from the mucilage naturally surrounding it. This newer method results in a change in the overall character of Sumatran coffees. This coffee is cleaner and sweeter than most from Sumatra with a unique tobacco, smokiness; and, still a classic heavy body and syrupy mouthfeel.
